Cet article rend compte des résultats d’une recherche qualitative menée auprès de jeunes Français et Québécois âgés de 18 à 24 ans au sujet de leurs usages sociaux de la caméra et de l’appareil photo numériques. Il en ressort que ces usages répondent en grande partie à des nécessités anthropologiques liées au passage à l’âge adulte, telles que le marquage symbolique de changement de statut, la production de rituels d’interaction propres aux jeunes et l’invention de nouvelles modalités de découverte de soi. Derrière des formes inédites de comportements se cache donc la volonté de répondre à des questionnements relativement traditionnels pour les jeunes générations.
