Abstract
The objective of this paper is to investigate the competitive conditions in the Turkish banking industry on the period between 1983 and 1996 by applying a new method previously applied to the U.S. and Canadian banking industries. The Turkish banking system experienced substantial changes as a result of the deregulation in the 1980s. Most restrictions on interest rates, market entry, and exchange rates were eliminated, and the number of national private and foreign banks increased. This numerical increase would suggest that competition in the Turkish banking industry has been used to test for the evidence of contestability of the Turkish banking system.
