Le champ de FLS est majoritairement déterminé par le contexte sociodémographique de son enseignement/apprentissage, du point de vue du milieu de son application, c’est-à-dire par des caractéristiques extérieures. Il paraît plus difficile de relever quelques caractéristiques qui délimitent le concept de la LS, d’une part, et le concept de la LE, d’autre part, en s’appuyant sur les spécificités du processus d’appropriation lui-même, c’est-à-dire sur des caractéristiques intérieures. Une piste prometteuse dans cet ordre d’idées peut être une approche cognitiviste du problème.
