Après avoir rendu compte de l’évolution des attentes éducatives des familles françaises et plus particulièrement des mutations emblématiques qui ont affecté le rapport à l’école des familles appartenant aux couches sociales modestes, cet article se concentre sur les pratiques parentales d’accompagnement du travail scolaire en milieux populaires. Mobilisant les résultats d’une récente enquête ethnographique, il montre qu’une partie des familles populaires, loin de s’en remettre pleinement à l’institution, développe des comportements d’appropriation active des enjeux d’apprentissage et s’inscrit dans une logique de défiance pédagogique vis-à-vis de l’institution. Celles-ci semblent avoir profondément intégré l’idée que l’école ne constitue pas son propre recours et que les parcours scolaires se façonnent pour une large part en dehors de l’école.
