Le roman consiste en 120 petits chapitres, chacun portant en guise de titre une minute entre 8h30 et 10h29. Les chapitres identifiés par une minute impaire sont consacrés au récit du Texan Carthew Yorston et de ses deux fils Jerry et David qui se trouvent piégés avec d’autres victimes dans le restaurant Windows on the World en haut de la Tour Nord du World Trade Center, le matin des attaques. Dans les chapitres identifiés par une minute paire, nous suivons l’écriture du texte par Frédéric Beigbeder, d’abord à Paris, et ensuite à New York.
