L’usage permanent des TIC en contexte professionnel suscite de fortes inquiétudes sur les risques d’atteinte à la santé et à la vie privée des salariés, en particulier des cadres. Devant ce problème, certaines entreprises cherchent à mettre en place des initiatives de « déconnexion » pour enrayer cette connexion permanente, notamment à la messagerie électronique professionnelle. Cet article porte sur l’étude exploratoire d’un système expérimental de déconnexion mis en place au sein d’une grande entreprise française de télécommunications. Ce système déconnecte la messagerie électronique en heures non ouvrables, tout en permettant à l’utilisateur de se connecter s’il le souhaite. Les objectifs de l’étude sont d’étudier la genèse de cette initiative, d’appréhender l’opinion qu’en ont les cadres concernés et d’explorer les conséquences de l’usage du système sur l’activité de travail des cadres. L’étude montre que ce type d’initiative se heurte à différentes réalités du travail des cadres qui rendent difficile la transformation des usages professionnels de la messagerie électronique.
