Résumé Cet article étudie la pertinence d’ajouter un investissement passif dans un panier diversifié de produits de base à un portefeuille traditionnel composé d’actions et d’obligations. De nombreux avantages plaident en faveur de l’ajout des produits de base. À partir d’une analyse moyenne-variance, l’ajout des produits de base permet d’espérer un meilleur rendement par unité de risque. La composante «produits de base» dans un portefeuille conduit également à une meilleure protection face à l’inflation en plus de réduire les pertes lorsque le marché des actions est baissier. En outre, la conjoncture actuelle est favorable aux produits de base, notamment en raison de la forte demande des marchés émergents qui devrait demeurer soutenue pour plusieurs années. Les auteurs discutent également de la distinction importante entre une exposition indirecte à travers un investissement dans les actions d’entreprises du secteur primaire et une exposition directe dans les produits de base, l’option directe étant la seule qui permette de livrer les bénéfices espérés des produits de base. Ils évoquent aussi la distribution des rendements des produits de base qui, par son asymétrie positive, permet d’espérer des chocs plus souvent positifs que négatifs. Les auteurs y vont d’une discussion sur les contraintes pratiques liées à l’investissement dans les produits de base par le biais de contrats à terme.
