Abstract
Les etudes en histoire urbaine traitant de la haine de la ville, des discours et des pratiques qui s’en inspirent, se multiplient depuis une dizaine d’annees, mais ont eu peu d’echos au Quebec. Pourtant, une etude des discours catholiques quebecois traitant de la ville et du fait urbain durant l’entre-deux-guerres permet non seulement de faire ressortir leurs caracteristiques au moment ou la majorite de la population de la province devient citadine, mais aussi d’identifier les traits qui les distinguent de ceux que l’on observe ailleurs dans le monde catholique au meme moment. Il y a, d’une part, la centralite du cas montrealais, qui incarne a lui seul toutes les tares du monde urbain aux yeux des catholiques canadiens-francais et, d’autre part, la facon dont l’urbanite est associee non seulement a l’irreligion, mais a l’Autre anglophone et protestant. Generalement hostiles, ces discours laissent tout de meme transparaitre de timides signes d’une volonte d’apprivoiser ou de s’approprier une certaine urbanite.
