Abstract
French intermediate housing has been developed, in the years of 1960s and 1970s, after the mass production of Grands Ensembles and Z.U.P, Zone Urbaniser en Priorite, which showed poor architectural quality, deteriorating the urban housing environment. The individual housing quarter`s solitary atmosphere needed the collective housing`s liveliness, and the urban collective housing needed to have the comfort of his own private garden, escaping from the high density, the lack of public space etc. So the idea of intermediate housing was studied and developed to adopt these two contradictory characters taking the advantages of each housing. It shows us divers forms and space concept through its produced works by some pioneering architects like Jean Renaudie, Andrault & Parat, Van Treek, Bouchez, etc. The French intermediate urban housing is worth studying as a pre-experienced example to give a learning point especially to the newly developed country like Korea, which still produces mega structure housings, to take it as a reference of urban collective housings to offer more possibilility to ameliorate the quality of them.
