Abstract

Abstract Radiotherapy treatment planning is becoming ever more complex, driven largely by the growing use of intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). There is a corresponding need to improve the computer‐based programs being designed to optimize the process of planning the spatial and temporal distributions of dose for such treatments. This article reviews the general objectives of treatment planning, and also the various physical and biological/statistical criteria that have been explored to serve as the bases for optimization objective functions.
