Face aux critiques concernant l'" essentialisme " d'une sociologie qui tenterait de construire la jeunesse comme une " catégorie ", une autre perspective s'est développée en France. Celle-ci est fondée sur l'analyse de l'" entrée dans la vie adulte ", c'est-à-dire de la transition d'un âge à un autre et de la combinaison des calendriers professionnels et familiaux. Elle a d'autre part permis d'analyser la question du report de l'entrée dans la vie adulte et de la désynchronisation des étapes qui ponctuent cette phase du cycle de vie. L'article, après avoir présenté un bref historique de cette problématique dans le cadre de la sociologie française, présente les principaux résultats les plus récents concernant l'allongement et la redéfinition de la transition vers l'âge adulte, tirés d'une enquête menée en 1992 par l'Institut français de la statistique.
