Beginning with an overview of AlN's characteristics and properties, potential applications and markets, we then summarize the methods that have been used for its synthesis. Particular attention is paid to the combustion synthesis method and the oxidation mechanisms, and growth mechanisms for AIN powders and whiskers that take place during combustion synthesis. Fine, spherical AlN particles with low (0.3wt%) oxygen contents and long and coarse AlN whiskers comprising more than 80vol% of the combustion product have been successfully produced on an industrial scale (about 3.5kg AlN powder or 1kg of whiskers per batch processing).
