Abstract
Le statut générique du Premier livre de Gaspar de Saillans est problématique. Il s’agit à première vue d’une correspondance familière, assortie d’une narration détaillée des circonstances entourant le mariage de l’auteur et intégrant les missives échangées avec la famille pour l’occasion. La publication de ces lettres trouverait sa justification dans la volonté de laisser aux membres de la famille un ouvrage commémoratif, mais l’ajout d’un long Discours de l’Auteur donnant les moyens de maintenir paix et concorde en mariage invite à classer l’oeuvre dans la catégorie des livres de dévotion ou du bréviaire à prétention morale. La présente étude se propose de résoudre les contradictions apparentes dans la finalité annoncée de l’oeuvre en examinant les différentes étapes de son élaboration en regard des codes et usages de la rhétorique épistolaire de l’époque.
