Entre 1906 et 1956, le Maroc est devenu un espace pour les affichistes français, en même temps qu’il entrait dans l’édifice impérial de la Troisième République. De façon évidente, car en phase avec l’insertion du protectorat dans la géographie coloniale de la France, le Maroc devient un des « thèmes » récurrents de la production d’affiches sur le champ colonial, mais son entrée dans cet univers graphique est tardive, ce qui explique sa posture spécifique et un catalogue relativement homogène. Trois phases sont identifiées dans ce processus créatif, qui elles-mêmes croisent les grandes évolutions de l’affiche en France : le temps de la découverte (1906-1926), le temps de l’affirmation d’un regard (1926-1940) et le temps de la mutation d’une image (1946-1956). C’est un Maroc mythifié qui émerge dans cette production, avec ses codes, ses imaginaires et ses objectifs spécifiques guidés par le colonisateur.
