Abstract
The goal of this thesis is to explore canon 517 §2 and the diocesan guidelines of the Diocese of Prince George implementing that canon. This investigation will begin by exploring some basic canonical issues surrounding the history and current formulation of canon 517 §2. Secondly, the thesis will review the responsibility of the presbyteral supervisory figure in relation to selected areas of church governance (cc. 532, 537, 536) in canon 517 §2. Due to the limited nature of this thesis, we will focus solely on the lay leadership figure in canon 517 §2 without any consideration of deacons. Such limitations will also preclude any significant examination of that lay leadership figure. However, the very relational nature of the presbyteral supervisory figure 4 suggests that at least some brief mention be made of this lay leadership figure within this thesis. Finally, the author will critique the forementioned guidelines of the Diocese of Prince George in light of the above considerations.
