Dans les etudes sur l'innovation dans les entreprises, on utilise l'expression processus d'innovation pour decrire i) la gamme de sources et d'objectifs qui menent a l'acte consistant a innover, ii) l'ensemble d'effets de marche qui decoulent de l'innovation et iii) les obstacles que les entreprises rencontrent lorsqu'elles poursuivent des strategies d'innovation. Un examen du processus d'innovation est donc concu pour faire comprendre de facon plus detaillee les caracteristiques qu'ont en commun les entreprises innovatrices et les caracteristiques qui distinguent les innovateurs des autres entreprises. L'Enquete sur les innovations de 1996 a porte sur un examen de ces dernieres dans trois industries des services dynamiques : les industries des communications, des services financiers et des services techniques aux entreprises. Le present documents est consacre a un examen approfondi des principales conclusions qui se degagent de l'Enquete sur les innovations de 1996. Deux themes sont evidents. Dans le premier cas, beaucoup d'elements du processus d'innovation sont communs a toutes les industries des services etudiees, comme l'importance de l'innovation en matiere de services, une nette orientation sur le client et un engagement en faveur de la qualite des services. Au-dela de ces elements communs cependant, les differences au niveau des pressions concurrentielles entre ces industries contribuent a engendrer d'importantes differences sur le plan des strategies d'innovation. Par consequent, bien des choses qu'il nous est possible ultimement d'apprendre au sujet du processus d'innovation se produisent au niveau des industries.
