Du début des années 1820 jusqu’à la veille des Rébellions la situation politique de l’Irlande occupe une place de choix dans les journaux francophones et anglophones de la colonie. Les journaux patriotes francophones de la colonie intègrent une grande partie du discours anticolonial qui se déploie dans les pages du Irish Vindicator et appuient les positions de Daniel O’Connell sur l’émancipation des catholiques et le rappel de l’Union législative entre l’Irlande et la Grande-Bretagne. Par contre, les journaux torys anglophones se montrent critiques des deux campagnes et représentent le chef irlandais en agitateur dangereux. Le débat sur la situation de l’Irlande dans la presse anglophone révèle une fracture importante au sein de la communauté d’expression anglaise et provoque à son tour un débat sur le rôle politique des Irlandais du Bas-Canada. Or la tentative des Torys de rallier les Irlandais de la colonie à leur cause les incite à développer un discours identitaire qui définit la minorité anglophone dans son ensemble selon des critères avant tout linguistiques.
