La perspective des parcours de vie est un ambitieux programme de recherche qui séduit un nombre grandissant de chercheurs dans les domaines des sciences sociales et humaines. Cette perspective tente d’organiser la complexité de la vie sociale en tenant compte de la temporalité, du contexte sociohistorique, des contraintes structurelles et des capacités actancielles (agency) des acteurs sociaux en situation d’interdépendance. L’engouement pour l’aspect conceptuel de cette perspective a été plus rarement accompagné par le développement de méthodes appropriées d’enquête qui rendent justice aux principes de la perspective des parcours de vie. Fervent promoteur de cette approche, Paul Bernard s’était depuis quelques années impliqué dans un projet utilisant une méthodologie mixte d’enquête, incluant des données des réseaux de différentes approches qualitatives. Nous chercherons dans cet article à soulever les enjeux reliés à l’application de la perspective des parcours de vie dans les enquêtes à petite échelle, en utilisant un devis longitudinal, tout en puisant des exemples dans une étude en cours portant sur le suivi longitudinal d’aidants des personnes atteintes de démence de type Alzheimer. De notre point de vue, la perspective des parcours de vie est un outil qui permet une alliance étroite entre la théorie et l’empirique tout en inspirant des innovations méthodologiques.
