<titre>R&#233;sum&#233;</titre>Les questions soulev&#233;es par le concept introduit par Terence Ranger d&#8217; &#171; invention &#187; des ethnies africaines, notamment la difficult&#233; &#224; d&#233;terminer un &#171; inventeur &#187; et de ne concevoir le r&#244;le des Africains que comme &#171; invent&#233;s &#187;, peuvent trouver un d&#233;but de r&#233;ponse dans l&#8217;&#233;tude de l&#8217;&#233;volution d&#8217;ensemble des classifications ethniques. Le cas du S&#233;n&#233;gal de 1816 aux ann&#233;es 1920 montre que, loin de se r&#233;sumer &#224; une cr&#233;ation datable attribuable &#224; un seul auteur &#8211; qui serait Louis Faidherbe &#8211;, la classification ethnique se met en place d&#232;s la premi&#232;re moiti&#233; du xix e si&#232;cle comme un aboutis-sement des r&#233;cits de voyages et autour du p&#244;le wolof, avant d&#8217;&#234;tre refondue autour du concept de &#171; race &#187; par Faidherbe, puis d&#8217;&#234;tre cristallis&#233;e par l&#8217;administration dans le premier tiers du xx e si&#232;cle. Au-del&#224; de l&#8217; &#171; acte de naissance &#187; d&#8217;ethnies prises isol&#233;ment, ce sont des dichotomies (Wolof/Maure, Tukuleer/Manding), des amalgames (Manding, Joola), des renversements de jugements de valeurs (Wolof, Bambara, etc.), des principes de hi&#233;rarchisation (&#233;conomiques, strat&#233;giques, raciologiques) qui sont &#224; l&#8217;&#339;uvre dans le processus de cr&#233;ation des cat&#233;gories ethniques.
