Abstract
The effect of platelet reinforcements on the toughening of ceramic matrices has been the focus of several studies over the past few years. Although the strength performance of ceramics reinforced by platelets is inferior to their whisker-reinforced counter parts, comparable toughening effects can be obtained. Similar to whisker-reinforced materials, R-curve behavior can also be observed in some platelet reinforced ceramics, including alumina reinforced with SiC-platelets. Results of R-curve studies on a composite of alumina containing 20 vol.% SiC-platelets in the long crack regime are presented in this work. The R-curves were obtained using chevron-notched bend bar specimens. The weight function method was used to extract from the curves the magnitude and range of bridging tractions in this material. These results indicated similar levels of bridging tractions exist in both whisker and platelet reinforced material.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
