Résumé La littérature traitant des facteurs qui influent sur le développement de nouveaux marchés à l’étranger est abondante. Or, bien que plusieurs auteurs évoquent le facteur culturel (la culture nationale), peu d’études ont centré leur questionnement sur le rôle de ce facteur dans l’internationalisation des petites et moyennes entreprises. On constate que de nombreuses P.M.E. font affaire dans des pays proches culturellement, ce qui, en théorie, devrait y faciliter leur implantation et leur fonctionnement, et leur éviter les malentendus culturels si fréquents entre pays éloignés culturellement. Mais choisir un pays proche culturellement facilite-t-il vraiment le développement international des P.M.E.? Nous avons choisi d’étudier des entreprises québécoises du secteur de l’édition de logiciels faisant affaire aux États-Unis et en France pour répondre à cette question. Nous verrons que la proximité culturelle est souvent un piège qui prépare mal les dirigeants de P.M.E. à faire face aux obstacles culturels liés à l’implantation à l’étranger.
