Abstract
Dans cette étude, nous faisons l’hypothèse que la sémantique linguistique est une fonction des opérations syntaxiques qui combinent les expressions. Nous montrons qu’il est alors possible d’avoir une analyse unifiée des termes dans tous leurs emplois, les différences entre ceux-ci étant dépendantes de comment les éléments sont combinés entre eux par la syntaxe. Le lexique a alors une forme optimale : il constitue le répertoire des associations invariables entre sens et forme. Nous illustrons cette approche en discutant de constructions copulatives de l’anglais x is y « x est y » , où x et y correspondent à des substantifs « nus » (des adjectifs ou des noms sans déterminant ou marque du pluriel), et montrons comment un système de règle très simples permet de générer les six interprétations distinctes qui peuvent être mises en relation avec les expressions de cette forme.
