Cette lecture de Léon l’Africain. Un voyageur entre deux mondes de Natalie Zemon Davis privilégie l’aspect de la recherche, et de la narration, qui rapporte des tableaux de culture du sud de la Méditerranée, au début de l’âge moderne, avec des panoramas provenant de la côte nord. Le défi consiste à considérer la Méditerranée du xviesiècle en tant que centre de beaucoup de questions à démêler. Mais surtout, on souligne que le personnage de Léon l’Africain –Yuhanna al-Asad, ou Hasan al-Wazzan– originaire de Grenade, musulman, diplomate à la cour de Fès, capturé en 1518 lors d’un voyage sur un bateau le long de la côte nord-africaine, qui vécut à Rome et voyagea en Europe puis en Afrique, a représenté pour Natalie Zemon Davis le témoignage de la possibilité d’une identité méditerranéenne qu’on peut nommer pré-moderne (ou bien pré-tridentine). La méthode d’écriture des mémoires de voyage de Léon au xviesiècle, comme du livre de l’historienne canadienne au xxie, se caractérise par le respect, la compréhension, l’observation, la tolérance et ce que l’on appelle aujourd’hui l’« interculturel ».
