Abstract
Ce livre est un hommage Yves Benot, historien et militant de l'anticolonialisme, disparu dans les premiers jours de 2005. Il est compos de textes slectionns et prsents par Roland Desn et Marcel Dorigny, tirs d'une oeuvre considrable. Avec un trs grand esprit de rigueur, Yves Benot s'est consacr tant la dcolonisation de l'Afrique noire, qu'aux fondements intellectuels de l'anticolonialisme et l'antiesclavagisme au sicle des Lumires, notamment travers l'apport de Diderot l'Histoire des deux Indes de l'abb Raynal ( Diderot, de l'athisme l 'anticolonialisme, Maspero, 1970). Comblant une lacune de l'historiographie de la Rvolution franaise, il publie en 1988 un ouvrage qui a fait date (La Rvolution franaise et la fin des colonies, la Dcouverte, 1988 et 2004), avant de s'intresser aux projets coloniaux et au rtablissement de l'esclavage par Napolon (La dmence coloniale sous Napolon, La Dcouverte, 1992). Il se montre encore attentif, dans ses articles, aux premiers pas de la jeune rpublique d'Hati : l'Association pour l'tude de la Colonisation europenne (1750-1850), dont il fut le prsident depuis sa cration, consacre notamment une de ses publications l'abb Grgoire. Le dernier ouvrage d'Yves Benot fut une rflexion et une vaste synthse sur la modernit de l'esclavage (La Modernit de l'esclavage. Essai sur la servitude au coeur du capitalisme, la Dcouverte, 2003).
