Abstract
Dans Intérieurs du Nouveau Monde (1998), Pierre Nepveu cherche à réorienter la notion d’américanité, telle qu’elle s’élabore au Québec à la fin des années 1970. Pour Nepveu, l’espace continental, bien qu’il soit ouvert à l’errance, doit devenir une figure de l’habitable. Car il faut reconnaître qu’une intériorité subjective investit une américanité dès lors structurée par l’introspection, l’identité et la mémoire. Prenant le relais de L’écologie du réel (1988), Intérieurs du Nouveau Monde convoque donc, de l’Américain Nathaniel Hawthorne au Franco-Ontarien Patrice Desbiens, un corpus littéraire assez particulier dont cette étude explore la singularité et les limites.
