Abstract
Au 19e siècle, les institutions caritatives pour enfants furent conçues pour protéger, isoler et éduquer les enfants défavorisés. À partir des années 1850, beaucoup d’intervenants favorisèrent le placement des enfants dans des familles d’accueil. Cet article traite de ces nouveaux développements et, à partir de l’exemple de deux institutions montréalaises, tente de saisir les motifs pour lesquels certains intervenants privilégiaient la solution institutionnelle pour protéger et éduquer les enfants, et offrir aux familles une aide temporaire.
