Abstract
Le théâtre symboliste en France, au tournant des XIXe et XXe siècles, est la plupart du temps considéré comme un théâtre élitiste, peu enclin à prendre en compte la société qui l’entoure et les problématiques liées à l’utilité sociale du théâtre. Or, la représentation du social et la dimension civique du théâtre sont présentes par un double discours critique et projectif : au sein même des oeuvres, dont nous donnerons ici trois exemples, par l’entremise d’une mise en symbole et en allégorie du social, sous le signe de la réparation et de la compensation ; en leurs marges par l’élaboration d’un théâtre utopique, à venir, qui serait replacé au coeur de la cité sous le signe de la contagion ; sur la scène par une mise en questionnement des relations scène/salle.
