Form Supplied in: liquid, available with many chemical suppliers. Physical Data: liquid, bp 34–35 °C, d 1.5 g mL−1 at 25 °C. Solubility: halogenated solvents. Analysis of Reagent Purity: 19F NMR (CD3CN, 188.3 MHz) δ 45.4 ppm (s, 1JF,C = 313.9 Hz, 5JF,F = 4.6 Hz).1 Preparation: a two-step procedure, involving the formation of trichloromethylsulfenyl bromide by reaction of trichloromethanesulfenyl chloride with HBr (eq 1), followed by heating with potassium fluoride, and removal of 1 in a cold trap (eq 2).2 Alternatively, irradiation of trichloromethanesulfenyl chloride gives bis(trichloromethyl)disulfide (eq 3), which can react with potassium fluoride at 150–160 °C. Bis(trifluoromethyl)disulfide 1 can be isolated by distillation (eq 4).2 In addition, reaction of trifluoromethanesulfenyl chloride with iron pentacarbonyl at −80 °C forms the desired disulfide 1, which can be isolated by distillation.3 (1) (2) (3) (4) Purification: distillation.
