Abstract
Ce texte vise à mettre en lumière certaines des modalités de la présence américaine dans l’univers du roman québécois, en relation avec les concepts d’américanisation et d’américanité. Après avoir présenté l’évolution de l’hypothèse de l’américanité de la littérature québécoise, on y questionne les concepts d’américanisation et d’américanité, en les situant dans leur contexte idéologique et en tentant de saisir leur valeur heuristique dans l’étude de la culture et de la société québécoises. Sont esquissés ensuite les grands contours de la nature des relations littéraires entre le Québec et les États-Unis depuis le milieu du XIX e siècle, relations schématisées dans deux romans publiés en 1978, Les grandes marées de Jacques Poulin et Monsieur Melville de Victor-Lévy Beau-lieu. Cette esquisse débouche sur une synthèse de la présence américaine dans plusieurs romans des années 1980 et 1990, ainsi que sur une analyse d’un roman jugé représentatif de cette période, soit Chat sauvage (1998) de Jacques Poulin.
