Neste artigo analisa-se a transformacao da experiencia das Associacoes de Desenvolvimento Local em meio rural, face a generalizacao da sociedade de informacao e comunicacao, em Portugal, sistematizando-se algumas das caracteristicas da cultura contemporânea que sinalizam essas mutacoes. Todo o referencial teorico tem subjacente a importância da metalinguagem da comunicacao e o papel mediador da tecnologia, identificando, nessa base, os eixos teoricos mais significativos para o entendimento da sociedade em rede e das comunidades virtuais. No estudo em questao contextualiza-se a experiencia actual das Associacoes de Desenvolvimento Local, gestoras da subvencao LEADER II, face as dinâmicas de cooperacao transnacional e em rede, associadas a evoluido das comunidades virtuais. Neste contexto, torna-se essencial pensar as novas categorias que influenciam as profissoes em geral, e o servico social em particula, como sejam o novo sentido de comunidade, de relacao, de linguagem e de cultura, categorias estas que perspectivam e exigem uma nova configuracao do desenvolvimento local em meio rural.
