Abstract
Abstract The sociology of mental illness studies the social causes and consequences of mental illness and the processes and consequences of societal reactions to presumed cases of mental illness. Three primary theories in the area are stress theory, structural strain theory, and labeling theory. Epidemiological studies indicate that just under half of the US population has ever had a mental disorder, and just over a quarter of the population has had one in the past year. Though mental illness is stigmatizing, there have been recent increases in the use of mental health treatment facilities.
