Abstract
La session de 1849, tenue à Montréal, est demeurée célèbre dans nos annales parlementaires en raison des émeutes d’avril et mai et de l’incendie du parlement par les tories anglo-montéalais. Cette session a aussi marqué une étape dans l’histoire politique du Canada-Uni. Elle ouvre l’ère du système de gouvernement responsable, elle consacre définitivement la rupture entre Louis-Joseph Papineau et Louis-Hippolyte La Fontaine et annonce la formation des partis politiques qui émergeront de leurs différentes visions du pays. Plusieurs questions importantes ont été débattues au Parlement en 1849, on a parlé de langue, d’éducation et d’économie. Le fameux « bill des indemnités » est cependant entré dans l’histoire pour avoir été le détonateur des émeutes incendiaires. Dans son roman à succès Jean Rivard économiste, Antoine Gérin-Lajoie a laissé un récit des émeutes de Montréal et de l’incendie du parlement, dont il a été un témoin privilégié. Cet article situe ces événements et ces personnages dans leur contexte de l’époque.
