Abstract

Hydrogeological characterization methods are constantly evolving to answer the ever increasing needs of regional groundwater resource assessments as well as local contaminated site investigations. This master's thesis presents early results of the \napplication of direct push (DP) and rotopercussion sounding (RPSS) techniques to the hydrogeological characterization of glaciated terrains in Quebec. Among OP techniques, Cone Penetration Testing (CPTu) is commonly applied in geotechnical site characterization but it also proves very helpful in hydrogeological studies in providing continuous stratigraphic information as well as hydraulic conditions, especially when combined with Soil Moisture Resistivity (SMR). The continuous stratigraphic information from CPTu and RPSS allows a better selection of other OP techniques, such as water sampling, soil sampling, permeability testing and well installations. Application examples \nof these techniques to resource and environmental studies are provided to illustrate their potential in hydrogeology. Then, this master's thesis deals with an application of CPTu sounding to the recognition of hydrogeological facies ("hydrofacies") in the well characterized deltaic Valcartier aquifer. Hydrofacies can be clearly distinguished on the Fellenius and Eslami CPTu profiling chart. The three coarse sandy hydrofacies can thus be predicted using ranges of the Ratio of CPTu sleeve to tip stresses, whereas the finer silty facies can be discriminated on the basis of tip stress. The hydraulic conductivity K could also be estimated from a correlation of logK to the CPTu Ratio, again for the three coarse hydrofacies, while the tip stress was used to estimate logK of the fine hydrofacies. This approach allows the estimation of a continuous horizontal K profile from which vertical hydraulic conductivity can be calculated over a chosen vertical aquifer thickness. Hydrofacies prediction from CPTu shows a very good agreement with Rotasonic core descriptions, while K predictions are representative but would require more continuous K measurements to verify the predictions and further improve the K estimation capability.
