Abstract
Cet article s’intéresse à l’évolution de la pensée du sociologue Karl Mannheim dans le contexte de l’effondrement de la république de Weimar et de l’émigration allemande des années 1930. Face à l’occasion perdue que représente la démocratie weimarienne, Mannheim tente d’élaborer un projet sociologique et philosophique original qui met en valeur une autre histoire possible de la démocratie. L’article se divise en deux parties. La première fait état de la pensée sociologique de Mannheim dans les années qui précèdent sa fuite en Angleterre (1929-1933) et qui se caractérise essentiellement par son idéal d’expérimentation philosophique. La deuxième partie montre que ce type de pensée expérimentale est à la base de son premier ouvrage post-weimarien intitulé Mensch und Gesellschaft im Zeitalter des Umbaus (1935), dans lequel il tente de repenser les fondements intellectuels d’une démocratie qui pourrait s’émanciper de la fatalité de l’histoire et décider par elle-même de son propre destin.
