Nombre d’auteurs se penchent, surtout depuis le tournant des années 2000, sur les régimes de laïcité ou de relations entre l’État et les religions, et proposent des analyses ou des positions contrastées. On peut identifier deux tendances lourdes dans l’horizon intellectuel, qui traversent également les débats au sein de l’opinion publique et des ordres politiques. Il s’agit, pour le dire simplement, de la reconnaissance ou de l’interdiction des manifestations de l’adhésion religieuse dans la sphère publique.
