Recent advances in solid-state NMR methodology and continuous improvement in high-field NMR instrumentation have made it possible to directly detect 17O (I = 5/2) NMR signals from organic and biological molecules. As a result, the past several years have seen a steady increase in the number of solid-state 17O NMR studies reported in the literature. In this article, we present an overview of the field of solid-state 17O NMR for organic materials and highlight some recent reports on studies of new organic functional groups and large biological molecules.
