La Revue Nègreest un spectacle de music-hall qui suscita de vives polémiques en 1925. Il est reçu comme une révélation du génie esthétique de la race noire et de son influence, délétère ou revigorante, sur la culture française. L’évidence de cette logique raciale s’appuie toutefois sur des ressorts esthétiques particuliers. Si l’imagerie coloniale constitue le registre d’appréciation quasi exclusif, c’est parce que le spectacle s’inscrit dans une double lignée, dont l’article documente les ressorts et les croisements : larevue à grand spectacle, au music-hall, et leballet moderne, parmi les avant-gardes. Le primitivisme deLa Revue Nègreapparaît ainsi comme une rhétorique politique spécifiquement lettrée, qui vient saisir les cultures « anthropologiques » à partir des productions esthétiques, mais aussi comme un moment de l’imposition du langage de la culture comme langage politique qui dominera les années 1930.
