Parmi les manuscrits d’André Chénier qui ne virent le jour qu’en 1901, soit plus d’un siècle après sa mort, il y a un groupe de notes portant sur la littérature chinoise. Dans ces notes, dont la composition remonte aux années 1780, Chénier s’intéresse surtout aux poèmes tirés du Classique de la poésie, le premier recueil de poèmes chinois, qu’on date du vie ou viie siècle avant notre ère, et il en loue constamment la beauté avec enthousiasme. Quelles beautés Chénier a-t-il pu trouver dans ces poèmes, qu’il ne peut entrevoir que par une traduction très approximative, et parfois même fautive, du P. Cibot ? Cette étude tâche d’examiner la traduction du Jésuite par rapport aux textes chinois, d’une part, l’esthétique de Chénier qui a fait de lui, avec les Jésuites alors tombés en disgrâce, un des premiers admirateurs de la littérature chinoise, d’autre part.
