Abstract
Abstract Steven J. Heine (b. 1966) completed work for the B.A. in psychology with a minor in Japanese at the University of Alberta in 1989. He subsequently spent two years teaching English in a school in an isolated Japanese town where he was the first foreign worker. His experience in Japan convinced Heine that much of the mainstream psychology he had learned as a student in Canada did not generalize to the Japanese people. This experience led to an interest in the cultural foundations of psychology – a subject he studied at the University of British Columbia upon his return to Canada in 1991.
