Abstract
Dans l’introduction au catalogue français des contes-nouvelles, Marie-Louise Tenèze souligne la difficulté qu’il y a à définir cette catégorie. Les contes qui y sont classés s’opposent aux contes merveilleux par l’absence de référence au monde surnaturel. Mais la platitude du monde strictement humain dans lequel évoluent leurs héros prend un singulier relief lorsque l’on considère l’acuité intellectuelle, la lucidité, avec laquelle ils agissent. Aussi ne s’étonnera-t-on pas des glissements qui ont été opérés dans le passage de l’Aarne-Thompson à l’Aarne-Thompson-Uther, entre contes-nouvelles et contes facétieux. Afin de contribuer à éclaircir la façon dont chaque catégorie de récit en rend compte, on tentera d’explorer la frontière parfois ténue qui sépare contes-nouvelles et contes facétieux en interrogeant plus précisément les liens entre le conte-type 893 (Le Demi-Ami, absent des répertoires français) et les contes dans lesquels sont présents les principaux motifs de ce type.
