Abstract
There have been months of violence and intimidation in the run up to the Presidential election in Zimbabwe which was held from March 9 to 11 2002. Mugabe was declared the winner despite reported evidence of rigging intimidation of voters and restricted access to polls in urban areas where the opposition had most support. Members of the independent media were arrested and the international press was denied entry. The Commonwealth observer group announced that Mugabes election did not reflect the will of the people and was held in a climate of fear.
