Abstract
Au départ, l'auteur examine les mouvements sociaux en tant que réseaux de groupes, de points de rencontres et de solidarité, réseaux dont les liens sont plus étroits lors d'une action collective et plus lâches en situation normale. Mais l'action collective, étant inséparable des démarches et des besoins des individus, est toujours menacée d'éclatement et, pour vraiment atteindre sa pleine expression, ne peut se passer de la politique. C'est pourquoi le quotidien est le terrain privilégié où prennent naissance les mouvements sociaux et c'est dans l'action volontaire que les individus se groupent pour résoudre ce qui les préoccupe. L'action volontaire fournit un objectif commun ; elle est une réponse aux dichotomies qui séparent la réalité sociale. Elle est aussi une réaction aux actions de l'État, elle défie le pouvoir en place, propose des alternatives de sens et offre une forme de contrôle social. L'auteur croit enfin que l'action volontaire élargit les espaces politiques.
