Le grand escarpement côtier du désert chilien qui est haut en moyenne de 700 m et se suit sur plus de 800 km constitue un trait géomorphologique majeur à l’échelle du Globe. Au Nord d’Iquique, il recule encore sous l’action des vagues mais, ailleurs, il prend l’aspect d’une falaise morte au pied de laquelle s’étend une plate-forme d’abrasion. L’abrupt dérive probablement de failles verticales à fort rejet, apparues à la fin du Miocène, qui ont reculé par érosion marine lors d’une importante transgression du Pliocène moyen à supérieur. Il a peu évolué pendant le Quaternaire. Les pulsations transgressées de l’Océan l’ont à peine retouché et la persistance de l’aridité, malgré l’occurrence de périodes à averses, lui a conféré une remarquable immunité. Une tendance à la subsidence s’est manifestée.
