Abstract
À partir de l’analyse des écrits politiques et des pratiques d’Antoine Boulay de la Meurthe, cet article se propose d’interroger la notion de République représentative, forgée, entre 1795 et 1799, par cette figure du républicanisme libéral et conservateur. S’appuyant, au lendemain de la Terreur, sur une analyse fine du jeu politique moderne, ce proche de Sieyès présente sa République représentative comme la seule alternative possible aux crises répétées traversées par le régime directorial. L’homme d’État se situe au cœur d’un puissant réseau, qu’il n’hésite pas à mettre au service de Bonaparte lors des événements brumairiens, ce qui lui offre la possibilité de mettre en pratique sa pensée, comme en témoigne son rôle central dans l’élaboration de la Constitution de l’an VIII.
