Abstract
Jacque-Auguste de Thou (1553-1617) fut un historien, un juriste et un mémorialiste. Il occupa également la fonction de bibliothécaire du roi à partir de 1591. Humaniste et pacifiste, il fut entraîné, comme plusieurs de ses contemporains, dans les Guerres de religion sous le règne d'Henri III. Catholique gallican modéré, il s'opposa à l'action des Ligueurs et devint l'homme de confiance tant d'Henri III que de son successeur, Henri IV. Grand voyageur, il ne vint cependant jamais en Amérique mais il s'intéressa néanmoins aux découvertes du Nouveau Monde et nous a laissé des textes qui éclairent les débuts de l'aventure coloniale française en Amérique. De Thou fut un contemporain de Champlain et de Lescarbot, ses textes témoignent des explorations des Français au Brésil, en Acadie et en Nouvelle-France.
