Rafael Chavez Dominguez*n solidaridad con la mistica del maestroIgnacio Chavez, Pedro Serrano plasmo entodo su significado el lema de esta Casa:“Amor y Ciencia al Servicio del Corazon”, seentrego en cuerpo, alma y corazon a desarrollarsu mision. Merecio del fundador de este Institu-to el titulo de “Gran amigo”. El iniciador delLaboratorio de Hormonas y Departamento deEndocrinologia del Instituto Nacional de Car-diologia vivio con nosotros 29 intensos anosdesde 1953 hasta 1981. Quienes tuvieron el pri-vilegio de conocerlo, dan testimonio de su ad-mirable vida. Murio el 2 de febrero de 2006 de-jandonos perennes recuerdos.De su semblanza podemos decir que hizo su ca-rrera de medicina en la Fac. Med. UNAM y segraduo en 1950, sus estudios de postgrado loshizo en Madrid, Espana, teniendo como mentordel Doctorado en Medicina a Gregorio Mara-non; curso estudios de quimica hormonal enCourtland, Inglaterra y la Universidad Mc Gillen Montreal, Canada. Se incorporo a este Insti-tuto a los 29 anos de edad y laboro en el hastalos 58. Su solida y calida relacion con el Institu-to Nacional de la Nutricion, el maestro SalvadorZubiran y los precursores de la endocrinologiamexicana, Roberto Llamas, Rafael Rodriguez,Francisco Gomez Mont, Jorge Maisterrena, JoseAntonio Garcia Reyes, Carlos Gual y otros mas,le facilito introducir e impulsar el desarrollo dela metodologia para medir hormonas, entoncesbiologicas, que luego siguio su rapida evolu-cion hasta el radioinmunoanalisis. Le preocupa-ba escudrinar las delicadas interrelaciones entreel sistema cardiovascular y el metabolismo. Tuvoque ligar el celoso arte de la Clinica, con la tena-cidad de las disciplinas cientificas de endocri-nologia, neurofisiologia, bioquimica, farmaco-logia y psiquiatria.
