Abstract
Abstract Psychological anthropology has moved away from cross‐cultural study of modal personality and such topics as child rearing and has become less interested in psychoanalytic perspectives in comparative psychology. But the contemporary interest in finding common ground between the two disciplines goes back to the general notion of collective meaning structures, norms, and values influencing individuals’ beliefs and actions – to the era when anthropologists saw personality types as the product of cultural socialization. To comprehend the Culture and Personality School it is necessary to go back to the shifts in the meanings of the concepts of culture and personality.
