A computationally efficient estimator of the channel response function was developed to characterize the underwater acoustic channels adversity to communications for St. Margaret's Bay during the UNET06 demonstrations. The DRDC multimode pipe projector (MMPP) that provided a 185 dB// 1nPa@1m source level at 44 kHz center frequency was allowed to drift approximately 2 meters from the bottom in 70m of the water from the NRL ACDS 8-element vertical array. The receiver array was placed approximately mid water column and doubly spread acoustic channel was estimated from the recorded data sets by an augmented Kalman recursion. The Kalman recursion with a point estimate of the acoustic response function was used to compute channel estimate and covariance function. Analysis of the channel response function and histogram which measures the adversity of response estimation uncertainty relative to ambient noise showed the probing interval of duration of 6.25 seconds at a range of 500m.
