Abstract
Magistrat ayant exercé dans plusieurs juridictions, en province et à Paris où il a achevé sa carrière comme président de chambre à la cour d'appel, Alain Noyer est également poète et romancier.Il compte parmi ses ancêtres le député Jean-Baptiste Bottex, élu du clergé de Bresse aux États généraux de 1789, ce qui explique sa démarche (compilation de quelques archives familiales et surtout étude des traces du député Bottex conservées dans les fonds des archives départementales et aux Archives nationales).Mais, plus qu'une nouvelle biographie de ce député du clergé, impossible en raison de la rareté des sources, Alain Noyer a cherché à comprendre quelles étaient ses idées sur la liberté religieuse et, au-delà, comment se présente la question religieuse en France à la veille de la Révolution et durant celle-ci.
