Minimally invasive approaches to the adrenal glands and kidneys are becoming standard of care, and the indications for a less invasive approach more clearly defined. The benefits of laparoscopy consist of reduced hospital stays, diminished postoperative pain, accelerated recovery periods, and improved cosmetic results. Furthermore, issues with open surgical exposure and also the small dimensions of the adrenal gland and kidneys in children makes these organs especially amenable to a minimally invasive approach. The anatomic position of the adrenal gland and kidneys has resulted in widely used transperitoneal and retroperitoneal laparoscopic techniques. First the anatomic specifics of renal and adrenal anatomy are considered, followed by the different specifics of the minimally invasive approaches.
